Culinary guides of Copenhagen presents:
Bornholm, Option 2
Food culture with a historical twist
Hammerhus is a foreboding fortress built on a granite cliff in the mid-1200s. It has had commercial and military importance for northern Europe over several centuries. It is the largest fort in Europe of its kind. We explore their welcome center and be amazed at the history.
Gudhjem is a charming seaside town on the waterfront with charming colorful homes. Known for a special dish called “Sun over Gudhjem”.. lets try it! It is also the home of the national Danish chef’s competition
Østerlars hosts a famous round granite church from the early middle ages (1 of 7 in all of DK), built to protect parishioners from pirates, offering views 360 degrees. There are excellent examples of lime paintings to behold.
Ekkodalen (Echo Valley) is yet another natural wonder on the island. Another wonder is a giant 500gr (1lb.) Tartlet filled with chicken, asparagus and cream sauce. A local specialty! We know of nothing like it elsewhere. Dig in!
Vasagaard Stendysse is a viking burial area of 300 stones from about 3500 b.c. (Stone Age). Many of the boulders have sun designs carved on them and some a design that looks like grain. Many researchers suggest this location to be as important as Stonehenge.
Slusegaard and Café has many curiosities. Amongst one that it is actually 12:00 when it is 12:00 due to its geographic junction (55N and 15East). The Café located in an old pig pen but super charming inside. Rustic in style there are lots of old photos, including the Danish Queen when she was an archaeological student doing digs nearby! All their ingredients are locally produced, and we will try a specialty of Pine snaps and cake! Afterwards we can stroll by the waterwheel and see trout as they squeeze through the old traps.
Nordic Fermentation (Nexø) specializes in using local berries, hemp, and vegetable products to produce a naturally delicious and healthy drink called Kombucha. Some of the combinations are made only by them. Malene Ritter started her production in 2017 selling all over Denmark.
