Culinary guides of Copenhagen presents:
Christianshavn, Cph
Street food and chronicles
Nyhavn’s memorial anchor, is our meeting place. It was donated by the Danish people in memory of sailors lost at war. An iconic location, the canal was dug by soldier’s hands in the late 1600s and conceived by King Christian IV. The canal area is super popular with locals and visitors. New culinary concepts seem to pop up this area even though it is an incredibly old part of town.
The canal is a super photo stop and home to one of the most popular Nordic thin crust, pizza places in town, Gorm’s. The crust is sourdough and all the dough stems from the original made in 2008. At the edge of the waterfront, we will cross the famous Kissing bridge. No cars please! Just walking and biking are allowed. To your left is the famous Copenhagen Opera House and to the right fine examples of the warehouses that dominated this island since the 1600s.
Connecting one island to another we land on Christianshavn, also known as Little Amsterdam. Another brainchild of King Christian IV. We visit the popular Bro’ens Gadekøkken which offers a streetfood environment. We will enjoy a taste of Copenhagen here. Zigzagging along, over another bridge to Holmen, we will go thru the King’s gate into the “Kuglegården” where the Navy built ships and armed them from the canal alongside. Two of the best know design houses are located here as is an ancient grape vine, from Madera saved by sailors during the Triangular trade period.
There is wonderful maritime history in the area, we cross another foot bridge where we will enjoy the canal area and learn the best stories of Christianshavn’s commercial background. Some tastings are coming up soon, including handmade chocolates from Confecture.
Our Saviour Church with its reversed 400+ step external staircase is a must see as we make our way towards the Hippie establishment from the ´70s, Christiania. While we may not officially guide you here, nor may you take photos, it is worth a peek inside and our last taste of Copenhagen today.
