Culinary guides of Copenhagen presents:
City Center, Cph
The heart of the capitol
City Center, at Amager Square, with roots in the Middle Ages, is a meeting place for most Copenhageners. It is central and beautiful, old and new, welcome to the place it all started!
Bishop Absalon’s iconic statue is our meeting place. He is the great founder of Copenhagen. Behold we see the city started in 1168 and had its focus on the harbor and herring fish being pulled in—money pulled in!
Stork Fountain and the Amager Square boasts Dutch Renaissance architecture, 2 pedestrians streets, one the oldest in Europe. We have our first tasting on this tour at a classic Hot Dog stand. 2021 is the 100 year anniversary of this long standing Danish snack.
The oldest residential building from the 1400s is just around the corner as is St. Nicolai church that is not a church but a café and art gallery! Explanation to follow…History for the Danes is tied to sea merchants and they brought us tea from Asia it will be offered to you from classic, old style shops, your next tasting will be tea based!
Riches from maritime commerce enabled the King to focus on the sciences and you will see the Round Tower (1642) from where famous Danish astronomers observed the stars and planets. Knowledge was key to this immediate area, as we are close to Copenhagen University (1475).
A transformation takes place as we move onwards to the immensely popular Glass Food Market (Torvehaller) and surrounding area which is dominated by Enlightenment period architecture. Our tasting will be quite modern, with focus on sustainability and health- back to our roots so to say.
On our approach to the Rosenborg Castle gardens, we get yet another treat and this one is liquid. The Amager Brewery and Tap house gives us a taste of their drafts. (Guests who wish to have a shorter tour can stop here).
Inside the gardens we walk where the King and Queen and their Court promenaded- indeed we take the Queens Short-cut to another area of town created in the 1700s. At Gasoline Grill we can try the city’s absolute best burger, you deserve it!
Taking a short-cut too, we wind through Skt. Annæ Passage which will leave us in the heart of Danish design shops, galleries and just at the Kings Square (Kongens Nytorv) where we will end our journey.
