Culinary guides of Copenhagen presents:
Kerteminde, Fyn
The cradle of ‘hygge’
Kerteminde is a 600-year-old Fishing and Merchant Town on the island of Fyn at the center of Denmark. Its roots go back to the Vikings who sailed into the beautiful fjord and settled in the area. The surroundings are so beautiful and the natural light, attracted famous painters (Johannes Larsen, Fritz Syberg) who created an artist’s colony here.
Juul’s Smokery, on the pier is where we will observe the old-styled smoking ovens, still used. Our first tasting will be at the harbor’s point, where Boris’ fish hut will provide a taste of locally smoked fjord shrimps! A delicacy.
A walk around the pier will give a glance into the backbone of the industry. Specialties caught here are fjord eel, flounder and still mackerel and herrings. We glance at “Amanda” from Kerteminde, a statue of a young woman who created a scandal and ended up having a beloved song written about her!
Frederik Paluan Møller’s (bust) 1809 square and the Toldboden (1590 originally, current style 1848) tax collection, currently gallery, open the town to us. We pass the churchyard of St. Laurentius’ (1486) and then the historical society.
Hørkeren (1700s) is a shop that brings you back in time. All the merchandise is as authentic as possible. Our next tasting is coming up! We will try a homemade waffle ice cream cone, and some local cheese from the cheese dealer around the corner.
Farvergaarden (1600s) is a museum that focuses on Belt fishing and the harvesting of herrings, but also features 7 different types of craftmanship work-stations.
Mussgaarden, Andresens Gaard, Gammel Købmandsgaard give us a real feel for this special bindingsværk community where many of the buildings date to late 1500s. The half- timbered, colored buildings will charm you. It will be a chance to experience the local handicrafts, architecture and provide us with another wonderful tasting of local refreshments at the oldest pub in Denmark!
Returning to the 21st century again we finish with a last look at the square and famous Tornøes Hotel at the waterside.
