Culinary guides of Copenhagen presents:
Nørrebro, Cph
Young, vibrant and diverse
Nørrebro is the most multi-cultural and heavily populated community within the city. Perhaps it is also the center of the culinary revolution starting in 1999 when Claus Meyer opened his Food House on the main road. He is also the founding father of New Nordic food, its manifesto (2004) and restaurant NOMA. Nordic food is based on locally produced, seasonal foods. We have lots to discover.
Since then, several Michelin restaurants have made their home here and revolutionary techniques and food-styles have sprung up. Dominated by young people, artist types and immigrants the average income here is much lower than the rest of the city but the dynamism is high.
We start at Nørrebro Rundel and visit Jagtvej 69, a landmark to a youth uprising and now a peculiar “garden”. Julius Bloms Gade leads us to Stefansgade where the tone of this quarter becomes apparent..
Mikkeller & Friends is our first tasting, a specialty brewery. They brew 8 new beers per week so one never gets bored stopping by them! Soon we see a Child Asylum (1887) but do not worry it is just a kindergarten!
Jægersborgade is probably one of most well-known streets in Nørrebro and there are normally a lot of foreign visitors. You can see why with the eclectic selection of eatery’s and shops (note the unusual wooden lamps and ceramic shops). We will have 2 tastings on this street; Banana and Karamelleriet.
Assistens Cemetery (1760) is an oasis in the city. The name means literally an extra cemetery! Very well visited it has become park-like, with cyclists cutting through to avoid street traffic. Here we will see the burial spot of Niels Bohr (Nobel prize physics 1922) and HC Andersen (Little Mermaid).
Continuing to Nørrebrogade we cross over to Peter Faber Gade (he wrote one our favorite Christmas songs) and move towards Guldberggade which offers an entirely different atmosphere. Here is a mix of new and old architecture and some hyper-popular food spots located in an old locomotive factory. This is a stop for a tasting for sure! Perhaps also a visit to a unique ceramic shop, Ane Schollert Ceramics. She is the 4th generation of her family to have this profession. Her items are sold all over DK and in Paris!
Off Sjællandsgade we enter Guldbergs Square, with Simeon’s church, a private school and Badandstalt! from 1917. Why were public baths necessary? Most apartments did not have facilities. The 1st one for Copenhagen was established in 1785.
For yarn lovers a favorite shop, Nicoline’s is within our sight. Thanks for joining us!
