Culinary guides of Copenhagen presents:

Østerbro, Cph

Culture and class awaits

Østerbro, historically and now, is an upscale neighborhood of Copenhagen which really developed and began to shine from the mid-1800s onwards.

We start at the iconic “Trianglen” built in 1907, as a waiting place for street cars and horse drawn carriages. What better place to taste a Danish hot dog! There has been such a stand (Pølservogn) at this spot for the last 50 years. Ours is run by Peter Rasmussen & family; sourcing ingredients made by a local gourmet butcher.

As we learn of the cultural importance of this area, our next stop will be a local shop (Kcal factory) that focuses on healthy food, sustainability and supports, with proceeds from your purchase, poverty-stricken children. The Danes are very conscious of doing what is right for the environment and society.

We come to a Olufsgade, a special street that boasts houses of all kinds of colors. The tasting we have arranged for you here is organic Italian style ice cream made daily at Oluf’s Is. The specialty here is a colorful one with edible flowers!

Architecture is especially interesting in this community. Rosenvægnet is the first private, residential area in the whole country. Art Nouveau and Bauhaus styles are in special focus as are the concepts of merchant foundations building societal homes.

Victor Borge was a favorite entertainer for many people, he was born right near here! The favorite bakery, Lagekagehuset, is ready for us to try a classic “Danish” which oops is Viennese! But soon you will understand what we mean. All guests on this tour will receive a recipe on how to make your own by e-mail.

Another famous entertainer is Hans Christian Andersen who spent his last days in the nearby area in the mansion of a well-known businessman of the 19th century. Exploring this district you will learn about Danish social welfare and childcare as we pass a whole block with just nursery and kindergartens!

Again, we go you back in time, to a community created by doctors at the end of the Cholera epidemic (1850s) “Brumleby”. These are the original buildings and there is over a 20 year waiting list to move in! You will explore the special life-style of current residents. The special communal lifestyle will be highlighted as we explore the museum with roots in the grocery shop with items from the Ye Olde Days!
